Discovery In Palma
An ancient Islamic bridge has been unearthed in Palma de Mallorca. The excavations underway in Avenida Antoni Maura in Palma de Mallorca, where the Town Council plan to build a multi-story car park have unearthed the remains of what could have been one of the five Islamic bridges that were used in the 10th century to cross Sa Riera.
The excavation appears to be a shallow rectangular column attached to the face of a wall of between 2 and 2.5 metres in length. This could have formed part of the most southerly bridge of the five which crossed the bed of the Riera between the end of the 10th and beginning of the 11th centuries. The construction technique of the period, using rope and burning wood has enabled the historian to attribute the structure to this period.
Above you can see a couple of photos taken in August. They are of the main centre of Puerto Pollensa along the promenade. As you can see it is a pedestrian area. If people watching is a favourite of yours, then nestle into a comfy chair at one of the many restaurants here and while enjoying your meal and a glass of Mallorquin wine - watch away.
